Holiday health and freedom

Spinal release

This simple four part sequence is a real favourite of mine (as many of you know).

It’s great for releasing tension from the spine and for freeing up the shoulders. The gentle twisting action is also beneficial for the digestive system.

Warm oil massage

Use a warmed base oil of either sweet almond or olive. Add your chosen blend - I can recommend selecting from these...

Lavender, Patchouli, Frankincense

Rosemary, Ginger, Lemon, orange

                          or grapefruit

Massage or have the oil massaged deeply into your skin and muscles

  1. Create a luxurious space in your home.

  2. Make sure it is warm and relaxing. Gather together some cushions and throws.   Light some candles and perfume with oils or incense.
  3. Get comfortable.

  4. Listen to your favourite music

The word ‘holiday’ comes from the religious ‘holy’ day, a day of rest.  ‘Holy’ is linked to words like “whole” and “hale” (as in hale and hearty).  Holiness is also closely connected to our wholeness and our health, both spiritual and physical.  And, of course, this brings us to yoga and holistic (whole health) philosophy and practice.

So thinking about this holiday as a time not only to rest and eat chocolate but also to  find freedom and beatitude I have put together some holy-day, mind, body and spirit practices and tips.

Body brushing
Excellent for the circulation, I love the way this treatment leaves my skin feeling smooth and tingly.

Candle gazing

This practice is a beautiful way of stilling the mind. As you bring yourself into the present moment, you experience a quality of space and lightness.

Freeing yourself from the past and future, you are alive to the moment.

Energy food

By the end of the winter we often feel the need to sort out a sluggish digestive system.  Our energies can be low and head fuzzy.  De-toxing, fasting or dieting may be options.

I prefer to make a shift in what I eat and drink.  Make a fresh fruit salad with crunchy apples and pears. add berries (frozen selections are excellent).  Also drink plenty of water (hot or cold) with a generous squeeze of lemon

Food for thought...

“When the mind is kept away from its preoccupations, it becomes quiet.  If you do not disturb this quiet and stay in it, you find that it is permeated with a light and a love you have never known; and yet you recognise it at once as your own true nature”

“I Am That” by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
